COUPLES THERAPY
Just like no two relationships are alike, therapy looks different for each couple. In my work with you, I’ll pull from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and attachment theory. My first goal is to create a relationship with you and your partner(s), which in turn builds the trust necessary for me to adequately challenge you, reflect unhelpful patterns, and serve as a guide to establish healthier dynamics. I will ask you to take responsibility for your actions, though strive to create a “no blame, no shame” space. As appropriate, I incorporate some humor into the work (after all, relationships can be fun!).
REASONS TO COME TO COUPLES COUNSELING:
Pre-marital counseling
Mental health is affecting the relationship
As a proactive step for your relationship
Wanting to explore potential separation and/or divorce
Seeking help with communication and boundaries
Exploring the idea of an open relationship
Experiencing a loss of intimacy
Feeling like you’re stuck in the same fights
Navigating through an affair
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
Whether you’ve been to therapy before or this is your first time pursuing it, let’s break it down. Therapy is more than just lying on a couch and having me ask you how that makes you feel (though at times that question will come up). It’s intended to be a safe space for you to talk about what’s really going on for you, to explore your patterns - including the helpful and the not-so-helpful stuff - and to learn how to get closer to where you want to be.
REASONS TO COME TO INDIVIDUAL THERAPY:
Anxiety
Stress & burnout
Low self-esteem
Loneliness
Relationship issues
Career uncertainty
Life transitions

INSURANCE
At this time, I am not in-network with insurance.
At your request, I can provide you with a monthly Superbill, which you may choose to submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement for services provided. Please note that any sort of insurance reimbursement is not guaranteed. You should check with your insurance company prior to meeting with me to learn about the out-of-network mental health benefits for your particular plan.
Why, hello! My name is Anna, and I’m a licensed clinical social worker offering couple’s and individual therapy. I enjoy working with couples of all kinds and with all types of struggles, including those wherein one or multiple partners have an eating disorder. I also enjoy individual work in areas such as anxiety, relational issues, life transitions, and boundary setting. I am not accepting individual eating disorder clients at this time, but am happy to refer you to someone who is if that’s your need.
I accept my clients wholeheartedly, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, race, body size, disability, religion, and socioeconomic status. I believe love is love, and that it should be celebrated in the kaleidoscope of forms in which it comes. I practice from a Health At Every Size® approach and believe health is about a lot more than weight.
I value the strength of the relationship clients have with their therapist and will work to build a rapport with you. Clients have described me as warm, genuine, and (at times) fairly funny.
Prior to joining the outpatient therapy world, I worked in inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient levels of eating disorder treatment.
I received a Master’s of Social Work degree from The University of Wisconsin-Madison (go, Badgers!), and a Bachelor of Arts from Loyola University-Chicago.
When I’m not working, you can find me escaping to the mountains to backpack, marvel at the number of stars outside city limits, and catch another sunrise. I’m also an avid reader with an appreciation for laughter, organization, Midwestern accents, and cookies & cream ice cream.
Q&A
Q: Can I work with you if I live in a different state?
A: Due to licensing regulations, at this time I am only able to work with clients who reside in the state of Colorado.
Q: I’ve never been to therapy. I don’t know what to do about an issue I have. Will therapy help with this?
A: There’s a good chance it will. I won’t tell you what to do (unless you are actively in danger and we need to keep you safe), but I will guide you in exploring the issue. We’ll identify what’s important to you, the pros and cons of various decisions, and the barriers to your decision making. Clients are often surprised how much clarity they can have after verbally processing their issue without filters or a fear of judgment.
Q: Do I need to bring anything to the first session?
A: Please complete the intake paperwork through the online portal prior to our first appointment. I will send you this shortly after we schedule your first session.
If you’re attending in person, please give yourself a few extra minutes to locate the parking garage.
You may choose to bring a journal and something to write with if you’d like to take notes throughout the session. Other than that, you’re all set!
Q: What’s the first session like?
A: In the first session, my main focus is to get to know you (and your partner(s), if relevant) and understand what you’re needing. I’ll welcome you into the therapy space and ask you about a variety of topics. These topics can include your interests, career, relationships/family, your spirituality/faith, sleep patterns, appetite, support system, and strengths. We’ll also talk about what prompted you to seek out therapy (what we call the “presenting problem”). This first appointment can tend to feel all over the place as we jump from one area of your life to the next. I tell my clients to expect this, and to know it’s normal. We’ll wrap up by talking about some logistics, including scheduling our next session and talking about how often we’ll meet.
Q: It’s hard for me to open up to people. Do I have to tell you everything right away?
A: Short answer: no! Just like in the “real world,” it takes time to build trust with your therapist. It’s completely normal to not feel comfortable sharing things from the get-go. As you and I continue to work together, this trust can build and, as a result, you will hopefully feel ready to share more.
Q: I want to pursue couple’s therapy with my partner(s) but they’re unwilling. Is couple’s therapy an option here?
A: Not every partner has the same level of eagerness to engage in the couple’s therapy space, but I do need all partners to have enough of a “buy in” to attend the session. It’s normal to be skeptical, hesitant, guarded, or overall wary of a stranger (me) suddenly being privy to some of the most intimate details in your life. That being said, I don’t force someone into meeting with me. Therapy is an investment for yourself and, in couple’s therapy, your relationship. All parties need - at the very least - a willingness to give the therapy a fair shot. Everyone will need to work at it to see any level of positive change.
Q: My partner(s)/loved one(s) don’t want to do therapy but I want them to. Will you talk to them for me to try to change their mind?
A: I am happy to connect with potential clients at no cost prior to scheduling a first session. I see these 10-15 minute phone calls as helpful for both of us. You get to hear about my approach and get a feel for me. I get to learn about your needs and let you know if I sound like a good fit, or if I have another provider in mind who may suit your needs better.
I don’t see my role as convincing someone to engage in therapy, but I can provide some answers about what the first session will be like, answer any questions they may have, and potentially quell some of their fears about the space. From there, it’s their decision!
